Harry & Ida’s Luncheonette – Financial Gain

Harry & Ida's luncheonette Apricot ChickenThe Financial District just got “a bisele” more interesting.  Well, a lot actually.  If you notice I dont even have a space for Financial District on the blog, which means I’ve never actually written about anything in that area.  Even the foodie desert of Staten Island outnumbers it 3-0.  Well you do have Eataly, Brookfield Place, a Nish Nush branch, some nifty food trucks and a dead rabbit.  So when its time to recommend a place after taking selfies with the Bull’s private parts, its actually fairly easy due to lack of many options.  I myself get attracted to the north, Tribeca.

So did you figure out what “Bisele” means?  I bet Will & Julia Horowitz of Harry & Ida’s know.  They are the brother and sister team of EWZ faves Harry & Ida’s, Ducks Eatery and now this Luncheonette.  Luncheonette openings, particularly the ones offering cafeteria style food dont usually excite much.  Unless they offer one of the best pastrami sandwiches in town.  As you come in, before you know it, you are chewing on that pastrami and you are hooked for life.  I became a statistic myself when I had my first.  I remember Will handing them out like candy in a Grubstreet Festival.  People especially got intrigued when he started yelling “Hey try this, its terrible”  Its like we have this skunk instinct showing its face on occasion.

The Luncheonette main focus is to serve FiDi lunch crowds healthier options in the form of a Jewish Deli, by handing out free pastrami samples!  Ok, baby steps.  If you gonna go for the meat, at least have something as delicious as this.  But then after you realize these guys can flat out cook, come back for the salmon, veggies (dont miss the carrots) and the terrific Smoked Apricot Chicken.  And to seal the Jewish stamp on this deli, they even have Kasha Varnishkes.  Talk about Ratatouille Moment.

The Jewish Deli is a dying breed in a city known for its Jewish Delis.  Visitors may not realize that today for every Jewish Deli we have roughly 100 Ramen shops, and 20 Poke places.  So when we have people like Will & Julia not only reversing the sad trend but also introducing some healthy options while at it, people need to take note.

Top 10 Dishes of 2015

Aquavit Bird's NestDid you think I had forgotten about this?  You were right, I did.  But then I remembered!  Then forgot again… remembered… but then decided not to bother.  Then I changed my mind again when someone wished me Happy New Years just the other day.  If its not too late for that, its not too late for this.  Personally I think about a week of Happy New Years sounds about right to me before the notion expires.  And I dont quite get the writers who list their best of, weeks before the end of the year.  How can they possibly be so sure that they wont eat something amazing in the next few week.  I had one of the dishes below in the last few days of the year….

Uni Mushroom Ramen at Jun-men

Calling this one Ramen is like calling Maialino’s Cacio e Pepe, Ramen.  Its essentially a nicely crafted, rich, and beautiful looking pasta.  Mushrooms, salty Pancetta, Porcini butter, truffle oil, noodles, and Uni that gets better and better in quality.  I’ve had this dish three times last year.

I’ve eaten many fantastic sandwiches during my youngish adult life, but very few left a mark like this one.  Thick, plentiful, tender, perfectly spiced slices of pastrami with cucumber and dill.  The greatest thing to enter the pastrami scene in many years

One of the standouts from a standout meal.  Pizza is in the name, but the attention to detail spreads throughout.  Eggplant and Shishitos come with this mild black cashew paste that transforms this dish, like a fairytale.

Momofuku and Mission, a marriage made in heaven.  As much as I love high spice and heat levels, I find the Mission Chinese wings a bit too intense.  But applying the seasoning to the meaty boneless Fuku chicken is a whole ‘nother ball of wax.  Pair it with the mini Fuku sandwich for a nice fiery lunch

I was all set to list the wonderful Cecina of the wonderful Santina which I must have each time.  But after the last visit, I think I have a new favorite.  Thinly sliced squash with pumpkin seeds adding a nice texture, crème fraiche dropped like Hershey kisses, brown butter, pink peppercorn and other spices and herbs.  Get this.

Take out my favorite dish (White fish turned Salmon Donburi), replace it with something like this, and I quickly forgive and forget… until you change your mind about the whole “available all day” thing.  Rich cheddary Dashi, Scallion omelette, ham, noodles, and more.  Magic in a bowl

Picking a favorite from this meal is like Ray Lewis picking his favorite illegitimate child.  Soft scrambled eggs with Osetra caviar and breadcrumb-like fried potatoes, with homemade bread and radish butter. Like breakfast at Putin’s!

Lets first clarify a few things, and please dont shoot the messenger.  There’s no pastrami, and there’s really no steak here.  The steak is a rare special, but can be found at sister American Cut, and we are talking about pastrami spices, not actual pastrami doing its best bacon impersonation.  Steak of the year!

Truffle Seafood Broth at Oiji

Mussels, Shrimp, two Crispy Rice “Sheets” that sizzle when the broth is poured table side.  But its all about the beautiful, dark, rich broth that makes this a winner.  Just a small hint of truffle, perhaps not enough to be part of the name, but just enough to round up the perfect broth

Perhaps the most instagrammed dessert on the planet.  The more I learn about Scandinavian chefs (see Chef’s Table on Netflix) the more I understand the motivation.  A masterpiece!

Harry & Ida’s – Meet our New Pastrami King

Harry & Ida's PastramiA lot of excitement lately centered around the pope’s visit to America and NYC.  For the past few days, he cruised central park and 5th avenue, met with our leaders, played with children in Harlem, and crowned our new Pastrami king in Alphabet City.  Ok, I’m not too sure about the last one, but that’s what I hear from my sources, Michael and Gabriel.  Either way, Harry and Ida’s deserves the title.  For too long Katz’s was at the helm doing a magnificent job satisfying tourists and locals alike, about 10 minutes from Harry & Ida’s.  Though H&I is not really replacing Katz’s any time soon.  Its the size of a shoe repair store without any tables, and a small counter by the entrance can accommodate about three food photographers.

When you first walk inside Harry & Ida’s for the first, you essentially sign a contract for life, or the duration of the place whichever ends sooner.  You are asked two simple but lethal questions.  “Have you been here before”, and “Would you like to taste some Pastrami”.  Yes, I suppose that if you are a vegetarian you may throw up a little bit inside at the thought, but as for the rest of us, its a point of no return.  You get two hefty, juicy pieces, far from your average deli sample.  One bite and…done, contract is signed, “One pastrami sandwich please”.  I invite the owners/manager to comment here please, and tell us if anyone ever left without getting more.  It doesn’t seem like its scientifically possible.

downloadThe pastrami sandwich is not very pretty looking at first glance, especially to pastrami purists like me.  It has dill, and cucumbers, and more importantly it has dill. WTF?  With that said, lets pause for a sec for a bathroom break, and a tip…

EWZ Tip:  If you come across a sandwich in NYC that has dill in it, its not a sign of a good sandwich, its a sign of a GREAT sandwich.  Dill is one of the ugliest things you can put inside a sandwich, and a sure bet to scare some people away.  But dill adds a nice flavor and aroma, and is specially complimentary in the summer, and over fish like salmon.  And partially due to that ugliness, its normally a sign of great craftsmanship.  “I don’t give a hoot about popular public opinion, I’m doing it my way”

The sandwich in a word is Maaaaarvelous (For my friends at Turks and Caicos who are smiling at this spelling).  It looks ugly at first, but after a few bites, it looks like the prettiest sandwich on the planet.  Thick, plentiful, tender, perfectly spiced slices can convert any purists out there.  One of the most delicious sandwiches I ever had in NYC, and I’ve had many.

These guys are no strangers to the art of smoked meats.  This is the sibling duo behind Ducks Eatery which I first tried a few years back at the Grub Street Food Festival.  Harry and Ida are their great grandparents who inspired this masterpiece.  There are more reasons to go back.  Like the much talked about hot dog, or the smoked eel.  But if they ask me that second question again, “would you like to try our pastrami”, how can I?
